Switzerland has called for de-escalation in the Middle East in the United Nations Security Council. International humanitarian law must be respected, the Swiss representation reiterated.

Switzerland is deeply concerned about the situation in the Middle East, it said in a message on the short message service X on Saturday night. The Swiss representation in the UN Security Council called for an end to the hostilities and the full implementation of Resolution 1701.

Switzerland thus endorsed the call by UN Secretary-General António Guterres. In the conflict between Israel and the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon, he had already demanded that the parties "urgently return to the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701 and proceed immediately to a cessation of hostilities", as Guterres said in New York at the end of June.

Israel wants to use military and diplomatic pressure to ensure that the Lebanese Hezbollah militia withdraws behind the Litani River, 30 kilometers from the border - as stipulated by UN Resolution 1701. Until now, Hezbollah only wanted to stop fighting once a ceasefire had been reached in Gaza.
