Switzerland has condemned the attack on the headquarters of the UN mission Unifil in Lebanon in the strongest possible terms. According to the United Nations, at least two UN soldiers were injured in the shelling.
The incidents must be investigated, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) wrote on the online platform X late on Thursday evening.
At an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, the Swiss representation once again called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, the FDFA reported. It was expected that the Israeli Defense Forces and Hezbollah would guarantee the safety of the Unifil troops at all times.
According to the UN, the two slightly injured UN soldiers are two men from Indonesia. They are the first casualties in the ranks of the blue helmet mission since the start of the Israeli ground offensive in Lebanon against Hezbollah a week ago. The Israeli army accuses Hezbollah of misusing areas near the Blue Helmets' bases for its own purposes.
