Switzerland has expressed concern about the reports of North Korean troops stationed in Russia. "Should these reports be confirmed, this would be a serious violation of international law and would potentially have serious consequences for security in Europe, Asia and beyond," the Swiss representation in the UN Security Council announced on the X news service.

According to estimates by the US Department of Defense, the number of North Korean soldiers deployed to Russia amounts to around 10,000. Some of these soldiers have already moved closer to Ukraine, according to deputy Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh. It is feared that the North Korean soldiers will be deployed in the Russian region of Kursk near the border with Ukraine.

Should the soldiers from North Korea actually be deployed on the battlefield, this would mean a further escalation and also show "the increasing desperation of President (Vladimir) Putin", who had suffered "extraordinary losses" on the battlefield, Singh continued. The move was "an indication that Putin may be in more trouble than people realize". The deployment of North Koreans in the Russian war of aggression would also have "serious implications for security in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region".

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte had previously made similar comments. He said that he could already confirm that North Korean military units were stationed in the Kursk region. The Ukrainian armed forces launched a kind of relief attack there in the summer and took control of part of the region. He put the number of Russian soldiers killed and injured in the Ukraine war at more than 600,000.
