The Federal Council has decided on further sanctions against Belarus. It is adopting a large part of the measures that the European Union adopted against this Eastern European country at the end of June.

As the Federal Council announced following its decision on Wednesday, the measures are aimed at further aligning the sanctions against Belarus with the existing sanctions against Russia. This is in connection with the situation in Ukraine.

Among other things, the harmonization of the measures is intended to prevent circumvention of the existing sanctions against Russia.

In the financial sector, the new sanctions against Belarus include a ban on investment in companies operating in the Belarusian energy sector. In the area of trade, the export and import bans have been tightened, according to the communiqué. For example, purchases and imports of gold, diamonds, coal and crude oil from Belarus or of Belarusian origin are now prohibited.

For example, the provision of services in various areas for the Republic of Belarus and for public bodies of the Republic of Belarus is now also prohibited.

According to the Federal Council, Switzerland will not adopt a general obligation formulated by the EU for economic operators to ensure that, among other things, their subsidiaries in third countries do not undermine the EU's sanctions measures.

Swiss companies are already legally obliged to comply with sanctions, writes the government. An extension of the ban on the transportation of goods has also not been adopted.
