Since the outbreak of war in Ukraine, the federal government has refused S protection status to around 2,500 people. The reasons for refusal are an alternative protection in another country or that the people are not eligible for S status, as reported by the SonntagsZeitung newspaper on Sunday.
The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) confirmed the information at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. The clarifications for examining the dossiers have become more complex and more applications for protection are now being rejected, a spokesperson for the SEM added.
The newspaper also reported that the SEM had revoked S status in 104 cases. The reasons for this were the fraudulent acquisition of temporary protection, delinquency, travel home and residence in a third country.
There are currently around 66,000 people with S status in Switzerland, as reported by the SEM on July 31st. In around 26,000 cases, S status has been terminated.
With S protection status, those affected are quickly granted a right of residence in Switzerland and can, among other things, take up employment. They do not have to go through an ordinary asylum procedure. The Federal Council activated the status after the start of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. Currently, only refugees from Ukraine are entitled to it.
