Switzerland has the highest concentration of top study programs in the world. This is the result of this year's ranking of study programs by the British higher education consultant Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).

According to the ranking published on Wednesday, ETH Zurich is the leader in three subjects: earth and marine sciences, geophysics and geology. The Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne also defended its top position in the university's hospitality program.

Although there are more top-ranked degree programs in the UK and the USA, Switzerland has the highest concentration (2 percent) of top-ranked degree programs worldwide, QS wrote in a press release on the ranking.

Reputation and productivity

A total of 16,400 university programs at more than 1,500 universities worldwide were considered for the ranking. The QS ranking is based on four indicators: Firstly, academics assess the academic reputation of the nominated departments at various universities. Secondly, employers provide an assessment of the graduates.

QS also assesses how productive the researchers were and how often their studies were cited. The various indicators are weighted differently depending on the subject area.
