Switzerland is a member of an international task force against the financing of Hamas. The "Counter Terrorist Financing Taskforce - Israel" (CTFTI) was founded after the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel.
Switzerland joined the CTFTI in November, as the Federal Office of Police (Fedpol) told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Wednesday, confirming information from the US Treasury Department. Other members are Israel, the USA, Australia, Canada, Estonia, France, Germany, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand and the UK.
One of the main objectives of the CTFTI is to bundle and strengthen efforts to combat international financial flows in favor of Hamas. The money laundering authorities of each member state are active in the task force. In Switzerland, this is the Money Laundering Reporting Office Switzerland (MROS) run by Fedpol, which performs the tasks of a Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU).
This is an operational task force whose aim is not only to identify and disrupt international financial flows in connection with the Hamas terrorist attacks of October 7, but also to use the FIUs' global intelligence to identify and combat terrorist financing.
Fedpol emphasized that investigations and information exchange in connection with terrorist financing is not a new task for MROS, nor is cooperation with other FIUs in working groups. MROS is currently a member of four permanent working groups and, in addition to the CTFTI, it also participates in the task force in connection with the financial sanctions against Russia, which was also set up in response to the current situation.
