The UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) is a largely unknown but fundamental commission based in Geneva, Switzerland, that regulates a variety of everyday items such as traffic lights, deodorants, and food packaging. Switzerland has been presiding over the commission for two years, and its current chairman is Boris Richard. The commission's tasks are wide-ranging, covering environmental, transport, statistical, energy, forestry, building standards, trade, and economic issues. All standards related to road traffic are attributed to this organisation.
Since the start of the Cold War, the UNECE has been attempting to promote economic exchange between its 56 members, from Vancouver to Vladivostok. The Swiss presidency of the commission was not a surprise, as it had previously been one of the two vice-presidents, alongside Turkmenistan. Since the Russian offensive, the UNECE has become more politicised, making the presidency more delicate. The focus of the Swiss presidency is the digital and green transformation to achieve sustainable development goals. Other challenges for the commission include climate change, economic fragmentation between blocks, and budget issues.nn
