The Touring Club Switzerland (TCS), together with partner garages, provided a total of 358,300 breakdown services in 2023. This confirms the slight increase in call-outs in recent years, the TCS announced on Thursday

Only 2020 was an exception, as there was a significantly lower volume of traffic due to the lockdown lasting several weeks, the report continued.

In 2023, the most frequent breakdowns (36.6 percent) were again related to starter batteries, followed by damage to tires or wheels (17.9 percent). 2.6% of breakdowns were due to problems with car keys or door locks. These three categories were also the main causes of breakdowns in roughly the same proportion in previous years.

Last year, 7800 of 358,300 breakdown assistance cases involved electric cars, while around 323,800 involved combustion or hybrid vehicles. 16,600 call-outs were for motorcycles, while the remaining 10,100 breakdowns involved other vehicles such as bicycles, e-bikes, trucks or motorhomes. According to the TCS, the onward journey rate after the breakdowns was around 80 percent, as in previous years.

A total of 18,200 call-outs concerned vehicles involved in accidents. The number of call-outs due to accidents has risen by just over 25 percent in the past two years. The TCS patrol has been offering its members a breakdown service since 1929. Today, the latter employs around 200 patrolmen and women.
