Telephone fraudsters have stolen gold and valuables worth around 450,000 francs in the canton of Bern in the past month. The items come from three cases in Bern and Biel, in which the victims called fell for the scam.

The other attempted scams could have been recognized and averted in time by the victims, the Bern cantonal police announced on Friday. Over the past month, it has registered an increasing number of reports concerning fraudulent calls with claims for money and precious metals.

According to the press release, the callers contact older people in particular with shock messages. For example, they pretend that relatives have been involved in fatal traffic accidents. The callers could help their family members out of their predicament with cash or precious metals.

The police urge caution and mistrust when unknown persons call and demand money or valuables. The cantonal public prosecutor's office for white-collar crime is conducting further investigations into the three cases mentioned.
