The Swiss National Council and Council of States have agreed on how and where to expand the Swiss motorways in the coming years. The National Council approved the Federal Resolution on the expansion step 2023 for the national roads, resolving the last difference with the Council of States. The Council of States had proposed a condition for the expansion of the A1 between Le Vengeron GE and Nyon VD to six lanes, which was that the project would only be included in the construction program if the Federal Council approved it this year. The other components of the expansion step 2023 include the expansion of the A1 between Bern-Wankdorf and Schönbühl BE to eight lanes and between Schönbühl and Kirchberg BE to six lanes, the construction of a third tube of the Rosenberg tunnel of the A1 near St. Gallen, a second tube of the Fäsenstaub tunnel of the A4 in Schaffhausen, and a new Rhine tunnel between Bisfelden BL and Kleinhüningen BS to relieve the A2 East Tangent in Basel from through traffic. The expansion step 2023 has a total expenditure of 5.3 billion Swiss francs. Environmental organizations, transport associations and political parties have already announced a referendum against it.
