Despite their electoral setback, the Greens are determined to pursue a candidacy for the Federal Council. On December 13th, they will not challenge a seat held by the Social Democrats, but instead will target a seat held by the Free Democratic Party.

The Free Democrats achieved the worst result in their history in Switzerland on the last Sunday, said party president Balthasar Glättli on Saturday in front of the media at the Federal Palace. "We Greens achieved the second best result in our history on the last Sunday," he added.

The FDP is clearly the party that is overrepresented in the Federal Council, said FDP faction leader Aline Trede. "The party must now take responsibility and make room," she said. The magic formula is dead. "That is why we have clearly decided in the faction that we will not attack SP seats, but rather a FDP seat," Trede continued.

"Climate Needs a Seat".

On Sunday, Swiss citizens voted in the federal elections. According to Green Party politician Balthasar Glättli, the same sovereign that voted on Sunday gave the Parliament and the Federal Council the mandate to move forward with an ambitious climate policy with almost 60 percent of the votes on June 18th. Therefore, it is necessary to align all laws towards a path of net zero emissions.

The Parliament has the opportunity to give Switzerland a government that reflects the diversity of the population with this candidacy, the party president continued. They have the choice between maintaining the status quo or building bridges towards a future for all and between delaying climate protection or moving forward with more climate justice.

The Parliament can further decide between equality as a side issue or equality as a solution for Switzerland and for a relationship to Europe that creates shared opportunities or for isolation.

"Dismissal is irresponsible".

Candidates have until next Friday to submit their applications for a Green Party seat in the Federal Council. One week later, on November 10th, the faction will come together for an extraordinary meeting to decide who will run.

The Free Democratic Party (FDP) has stated that the removal of incumbent federal councillors does not correspond to the system of Switzerland. "The President of the Centre has already emphasized this several times. We expect him to stand by his word," the FDP told the news agency Keystone-SDA on Saturday. Karin Keller-Sutter and Ignazio Cassis have done outstanding work in their departments. "A removal would be irresponsible and would cause a mess in important dossiers."

On Sunday, the Green Party lost five seats in Parliament, almost a fifth of their delegation. They now have 23 mandates and are the fifth strongest force. The FDP lost one seat and now has 28 seats. The big winner of the election was the SVP. They were able to expand their leadership by nine seats and reached 62 seats.

GLP does not make any claims.

For the Federal Council elections on December 13th, GLP President Jürg Grossen has not claimed a seat for the GLP, as the party confirmed to the news agency Keystone-SDA. This is a matter for the other parties.

The magic formula has once again manifested itself in the course of the elections. The magic formula is a clinging to the old system of the other parties, to the past.

The results of the election show that the FDP, with 14.3 percent of the vote, almost holds 30 percent of the seats in the Federal Council. On the other hand, almost a quarter of the parties represented in Parliament are not represented in the Federal Council. The Greens-Liberals have stated that it is legitimate to now openly discuss this situation.
