The new President of Juso Switzerland is Mirjam Hostetmann. The 24-year-old former Vice-President succeeds Nicola Siegrist, who stepped down on Saturday after around two years in office.
The delegates of Juso Switzerland elected Hostetmann as their new president with 119 votes at their extraordinary annual meeting in Solothurn on Saturday, the party announced. Her competitor, Jakub Walczak, received 75 votes.
Capitalism must die "so that we can live", said the Obwalden native in her candidacy speech. Together with the Juso, she would "fight for intersectional socialism, because that is the only answer to the crises of our time".
The retiring Siegrist told the delegates that he was proud to have been able to fight for a fairer Switzerland in recent years. He had left a lasting mark on the Juso in the last five years as President and Vice President, the party wrote in its press release.
The Juso delegates also passed a resolution in which they criticized Switzerland's asylum policy. According to the resolution, the policy of Justice Minister Beat Jans is unworthy of a social democratic Federal Councillor. Instead of repression and tightening up, the Juso demand better conditions in the asylum system and a Swiss rescue mission in the Mediterranean.
