At the party's delegates' meeting, SVP party president Marco Chiesa described limiting immigration as one of the most important tasks for the coming legislative period. A motion to no longer allow list combinations in National Council elections received support at the meeting in Thurgau.

"Almost all of the problems we have in our country today are due to excessive immigration," Chiesa told delegates in Alterswilen TG on Saturday. He therefore called for an "asylum freeze".

Personal responsibility must be strengthened in social insurance and healthcare. "The cost of health insurance premiums must not continue to rise." Chiesa also linked the rise in healthcare costs to immigration.

The SVP delegates supported a motion that list combinations should no longer be permitted in National Council elections. The party's parliamentary group was instructed to campaign for a change in the law. However, sub-lists should still be possible.

Aargau National Councillor Thomas Burgherr justified his motion by stating that arithmetical and electoral tactical considerations were paramount. However, the will of the voters is not clearly reflected due to the list combinations. "The influence of the remaining seats on the distribution of seats is beyond the control of the voters," Burgherr continued.

Switzerland-EU relations as a major topic

Relations between Switzerland and the EU and neutrality were also discussed. Lucerne National Councillor Franz Grüter lamented the "creeping accession to the EU". Grüter went on to say that there were "untenable points" for Switzerland in negotiations with the EU, including the dynamic adoption of legislation and dispute resolution by the European Court of Justice.

The Solothurn National Councillor Walter Wobmann saw Switzerland's neutrality in danger and campaigned for the so-called neutrality initiative. For example, he was bothered by Switzerland's willingness to sell battle tanks to Germany. "As a result of the transfer of German tanks to Ukraine, this ring exchange fills gaps in the German armed forces," said Wobmann.

SVP Federal Councillors Guy Parmelin and Albert Rösti were also present at the SVP delegates' meeting in Alterswilen TG on Saturday. Over 300 delegates took part.
