The Thurgau Office for the Environment has extended the permit for the ship salvage association from Romanshorn TG to salvage the wreck of the steamboat in Lake Constance. The project had to be postponed in mid-May due to technical problems.
The association now has until August 31 to salvage the "Säntis" with the renewed water use permit, the canton of Thurgau wrote on Instagram on Tuesday. The original permit was valid until the end of May.
One of the reasons for the failure of the salvage operation planned two weeks ago was a broken rope. Diving robots had previously attached several steel cables so that the steamboat could finally be brought to the surface from a depth of 210 meters.
Working under water
Before the salvage operation can continue, diving robots at the bottom of the lake will now have to replace technical parts and untangle lines, among other things, explained those responsible. They are convinced that they will still be able to salvage the ship over the course of the summer.
There is great public interest in the wreck. The ship salvage association organized seven spectator ships with around 1000 guests for the original salvage date.
Deliberately sunk in 1933
The "Säntis" was deliberately sunk in May 1933. It lay in the middle of the lake between Romanshorn and Langenargen D. Scrapping it was rejected as too expensive at the time. The 49-metre-long ship had been sailing on Lake Constance since 1892 and could carry 400 passengers.
The former owner of the steamship, Schweizerische Bodensee-Schifffahrt AG, sold the wreck to the ship salvage association for a symbolic franc.
