The partially destroyed A13 highway could cause complete "traffic paralysis" at peak times, fears Luca Albertoni, Director of the Ticino Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This would not only have an impact on tourism in Ticino, but also on the entire economy of the southern canton.
Transit at the Gotthard is already "problematic" on both road and rail, said Albertoni when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency. Now the lack of at least a partial alternative such as the A13 represents an additional problem.
The concern is therefore "very great", continued Albertoni. Not only tourism in Ticino, but also the industrial and craft sectors are closely linked to the rest of Switzerland.
"Sensitive phase" for Ticino
Christian Vitta (FDP), head of the Ticino economy, also expressed his concern about the possible effects of the interruption to the A13. For the southern canton, it is important that traffic on the north-south axis is organized in the best possible way during this "sensitive phase" in order to limit the unavoidable inconvenience as much as possible.
A longer closure of the A13 would cause "inconvenience" both in terms of traffic and economically, as this is the peak tourist season, Vitta continued in response to an inquiry from the Keystone-SDA news agency.
It is therefore important that the federal government and cantons work closely together. Ticino is currently in direct contact with Transport Minister Albert Rösti and Ticino's Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis.
