By the end of 2025, transport companies will no longer have to provide ticket validators. According to the industry association Alliance Swisspass, the reason for this is the increasing purchase of tickets via digital channels.
Alliance Swisspass confirmed this to the news agency Keystone-SDA on Wednesday, according to information from the consumer magazine K-Tipp. Already today, there are no more validation cards in some networks in French-speaking Switzerland, Alliance Swisspass wrote. Many of the ticket validation machines have also reached the end of their service life and need to be replaced, which would result in very high investments.
Cancellation cards are still popular with public transport customers, wrote K-Tipp on Wednesday. Over 6.3 million stamp cards are said to have been sold last year. For Alliance Swisspass, however, this is still low compared to the total number of tickets.
The possible abolition of the cards is causing difficulties for many parents, the consumer magazine noted. Children of primary school age would not be able to buy a digital ticket if they did not have a smartphone. Poor people who cannot afford a smartphone or cannot obtain a credit card from the banks would also be affected, the aid organization Caritas was quoted as saying.
According to Alliance Swisspass, the public transport industry has been examining successor solutions for some time. The needs of the various stakeholder groups, such as children traveling alone or people without smartphones, are also being taken into account.
According to the industry association, anonymous travel should continue to be possible in the future. Public transport in Switzerland complies with the applicable data protection regulations.
