According to a tobacco prevention study, the majority of disposable electronic cigarettes sold in Switzerland do not comply with the law. These so-called "puff bars" often contain more liquid than permitted.

E-cigarettes with 1500 or 2500 puffs are often available in online stores or boutiques, the Swiss Tobacco Prevention Association (AT Switzerland) announced on Saturday. It is even possible to order "puffs" online with a tank volume of 30 milliliters, which corresponds to 16,000 puffs. This is 15 times more than the legal limit.

The standards applicable in Switzerland are based on an EU directive from 2014, which states that each e-cigarette with a closed system must not contain more than 2 milliliters of liquid volume. This corresponds to around 600 puffs.

The illegal products were mostly manufactured in China and sold cheaply and without age checks via online sales platforms, AT Switzerland reported. According to the investigation, they were not only sold in small online stores, but also on large Swiss e-commerce platforms. AT Switzerland examined over 100 websites.

Galaxus removed products

The online retailer Galaxus, for example, removed all non-compliant products from its range on Friday after the results of the study became known, as a company spokesperson told the Keystone-SDA news agency. He confirmed information from the newspapers "24 Heures" and "Tribune de Genève".

In addition, the Migros subsidiary wants to automatically ensure that no illegal e-cigarettes are offered in future. According to AT Switzerland, Galaxus offered almost 350 e-cigarettes on its website.

AT Switzerland regretted that the federal government had not yet taken any effective measures to combat the problem. The cantonal chemists are responsible for checking the conformity of the "puffs". AT Switzerland intends to write directly to the cantons and provide them with a list of the offending companies. The cantons must take action "without delay".
