A rare total solar eclipse to be observed in North America began on Monday. The shadow of the moon plunged the west coast of Mexico into total darkness at 11.07 a.m. (local time, 8.07 p.m. Swiss time), moving on across the USA to Canada.

The area from which the complete eclipse of the sun can be seen is around 185 kilometers wide and includes the major US cities of Dallas, Indianapolis and Buffalo.

The last time people in the USA had the opportunity to observe a solar eclipse was in 2017 - albeit from a smaller area than this time.

Around 32 million people live in places from which the blackout can be seen on Monday, with a further 150 million living within a radius of 320 kilometers. Most hotel rooms in the affected area have been fully booked for months.
