A rare total solar eclipse observed in North America began in Mexico on Monday and stretched from southwest to northeast across the USA and Canada.
The shadow of the moon plunged the west coast of Mexico into total darkness at 11.07 a.m. (local time, 8.07 p.m. Swiss time), before moving on across the USA to Canada.
Beginning over the Pacific, the umbra stretched across northern Mexico, crossed the USA from Texas northeast to Maine, grazed southeastern Canada and ended over the North Atlantic.
The area from which the complete eclipse of the sun can be seen is around 185 kilometers wide and includes the major US cities of Dallas, Indianapolis and Buffalo.
The last time people in the USA had the opportunity to observe a solar eclipse was in 2017 - albeit from a smaller area than this time.
Around 32 million people live in places from which the blackout can be seen on Monday, with a further 150 million living within a radius of 320 kilometers. Most hotel rooms in the affected area have been fully booked for months.
