Trade unions and staff associations have welcomed the National Council's decision to provide emergency state aid for the ailing steelworks. Syna, Unia, the Swiss Commercial Association and Employees Switzerland announced that Tuesday's decision was the result of a determined fight by steel workers.

In recent weeks, the employees have repeatedly highlighted the importance of their work and domestic steel production. According to the press release, they have done so with demonstrations in Bern, Gerlafingen SO and Emmenbrücke LU, as well as in talks with politicians.

The financial support for the steel and aluminum plants is rightly linked to conditions, it continued. Companies must provide a location guarantee, which also rules out mass redundancies for a substantial part of the workforce.
