Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has sharply criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's blockade of the EU's planned aid to Ukraine.
The Ukrainian issue is an existential issue, Tusk said on Thursday on the sidelines of a special summit in Brussels. "And today, Viktor Orban's position is a threat to our security." There is no problem in Brussels with Ukraine fatigue, but with Orban fatigue.
The package with financial support commitments amounting to 50 billion euros (around 46.6 billion Swiss francs) for the period up to the end of 2027 should actually have been decided at a regular EU summit last December. At that time, however, Orban vetoed the deal and prevented an agreement from being reached.
He could not accept this very strange and very selfish game by Orban, Tusk said on Thursday.
If no solution is found in the talks with Orban, the other EU member states want to act as a group of 26 - i.e. without Hungary. At the same time, it is considered likely that there would then be discussions about possible steps to withdraw Hungary's voting rights in EU decisions.
Tusk was open about this: "I think we need to be more optimistic when it comes to our power and our arguments." We need to think about all possible measures for the future - "but perhaps not today", the Pole added. "Rather, it is up to Victor Orban to decide whether Hungary is part of our community or not."
