Two of the five seats on the Solothurn cantonal government council will become vacant. The two current members of government Brigit Wyss (Greens) and Remo Ankli (FDP) will not be standing for re-election in March 2025. Wyss won a government seat for the Greens for the first time in 2017.

In an interview with the "Solothurner Zeitung" newspaper on Wednesday, 51-year-old Education Director Ankli said that he has been a member of the cantonal government for almost three legislative periods. It is important in terms of state policy that there are regular changes in executive offices.

Ankli had run unsuccessfully for the Council of States in the federal elections in fall 2023. After the poor result in the first ballot, the FDP withdrew Ankli from the race. The FDP currently has two members in the cantonal government.

Greens want to defend their seat

Councillor Wyss will also not be standing for re-election. The 64-year-old Director of Economic Affairs is the first representative of the Greens in the government. The Greens wrote that Wyss had brought "green politics to the center of society without blinkers". According to the party, it intends to defend its seat in government.

Former National Councillor Wyss won the FDP's second seat in the run-off election in 2017. The FDP had previously held two seats in the government for 65 years.

In addition to Wyss and Ankli, Sandra Kolly (center), Susanne Schaffner (SP) and Peter Hodel (FDP) are currently members of the government council. The SVP has so far failed in all attempts to win a seat on the executive.
