Two people died in a fire in a residential building in Pfaffnau, Lucerne, on Monday night. The emergency services rescued the two dead from the ruins of the fire on Monday afternoon.

The investigating authorities assume that these are the two people aged 68 and 74 who have been missing since the fire, according to the Lucerne public prosecutor's office. The definitive identifications are still pending and the investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

The emergency services were able to evacuate a total of seven residents. Three of them had to be taken to hospital due to suspected smoke inhalation, but have since been able to leave.

The municipality of Pfaffnau organized emergency accommodation for the evacuees. According to the public prosecutor's office, emergency solutions were also found for the animals in the property.

The fire in the apartment building with adjoining barn broke out shortly before 00:30 on Monday night on Chottenweg in Pfaffnau. The extinguishing work lasted until the early afternoon, as Simon Kopp, spokesman for the Lucerne public prosecutor's office, told the Keystone-SDA news agency on request. Specialists were called in to enter the building, which was in danger of collapsing, as quickly as possible.
