Two Swiss nationals were killed in the terrorist attacks by the radical Islamic group Hamas on October 7. Both were Swiss-Israeli dual citizens, as the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) announced on Friday evening at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency.
The FDFA received official confirmation of the second fatality on Thursday, it said on Friday. For reasons of data and privacy protection, no further details could be provided, the Foreign Ministry added. This was first reported by the NZZ.
Five days after the Hamas terrorist attack, Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis confirmed the first Swiss casualty. The man was an Israeli-Swiss dual citizen aged almost 70. Not much was known about the death. However, it is clear that the man's death was the result of an "unfortunate encounter" with the terrorists. The man had lived in Israel since 2004. Israel was home to one of the largest communities of Swiss abroad.
On 7 October 2023, the radical Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas and other extremist groups carried out the worst massacre in Israel's history in the Israeli border area with the Gaza Strip. More than 1200 people were killed on the Israeli side, including at least 850 civilians. Around 240 hostages were taken to Gaza, including several Germans. The Israeli army then launched a military operation in the Gaza Strip. On Friday morning Swiss time, an agreed ceasefire came into force, which is to last at least four days.
