Ukraine has expressed its displeasure at Swiss support for a peace plan presented by China and Brazil for an end to the Russian-Ukrainian war. Such "peace initiatives" are only there to create an illusion of dialog.
"All initiatives that do not contain a clear reference to the UN Charter and do not guarantee the full restoration of Ukraine's territorial integrity are unacceptable," the Foreign Ministry in Kiev wrote in a commentary. Kiev was also annoyed that Ukraine was being discussed without Ukraine.
Switzerland supports the initiative by China and Brazil because it calls for a ceasefire and a political solution to the conflict, Nicolas Bideau, spokesman for the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), recently told the Keystone-SDA news agency.
The initiative is important because it offers an alternative to the bellicose speeches that have come from both the Ukrainian and Russian sides at the UN, said Bideau. When publishing the initiative, Switzerland had pointed out the importance of a reference to the UN Charter, which was missing. According to Bideau, the importance of the UN Charter in the context of the initiative was recalled this week by the Chinese Foreign Minister in the UN Security Council. For the FDFA, the initiative is within the framework of the UN Charter.
In June, Switzerland hosted the first peace summit for Ukraine without Moscow representatives on the Bürgenstock on Lake Lucerne. The subject of the discussions was a peace plan presented by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the fall of 2022. This is based on a complete withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory. A second summit is to be held with Russia if possible.
