According to the UN, Israel has now ordered the evacuation of a quarter of the territory in Lebanon for its fight against the Hezbollah militia.

"Over 25 percent of the country is now under a direct Israeli evacuation order," said Rema Jamous Imseis, Director of the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR in the Middle East, in Geneva. People often fled with only what they had on them.

Imseis reported on two women with nine children who had fled from the south of the country after a bomb hit less than 100 meters away from them. They had walked with their children for ten hours towards the Syrian border, without food or water. "People are responding to calls to evacuate and fleeing with almost nothing," she said. Around a fifth of the country's five million inhabitants have already been displaced.

Around 2,200 people have been killed and more than 10,000 injured since the escalation of Israeli attacks in mid-September, said Imseis. 70 percent of schools in the country were being used as emergency shelters and classes were being canceled.

Israel wants to target the Hezbollah militia, which is allied with Iran, with its attacks. Since the terrorist attacks on Israel from the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, the militia has fired thousands of rockets at Israel in solidarity with Hamas, which rules there. According to government figures, more than 60,000 people in northern Israel have had to leave their homes.
