The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, condemns the recent Russian missile attacks on densely populated areas in Ukraine and a children's hospital in the capital Kiev. "Among the victims were the sickest children in Ukraine," he said in Geneva. Shockingly, the intensive care unit of Ukraine's largest children's hospital was severely damaged in one of the attacks and the dialysis department was destroyed. "This is abhorrent," said Türk. "Those who have influence must do everything they can to stop these attacks immediately."

Almost 40 people were killed in the rocket attacks on Monday. One of the largest children's hospitals in Kiev was badly damaged. Mayor Vitali Klitschko spoke of 16 injured in the hospital, including seven children. Two of the injured died.

Türk also reported that the entire hospital was now without power, according to health authorities, preventing the use of ventilators and other urgent treatment. His team had visited the site shortly after the attack and observed children being treated in hospital beds set up in parks and streets amid dust, chaos and debris.

Also in Kiev, according to Türk, at least seven civilians were killed in one of the largest women's health centers in Ukraine by falling debris from a missile intercepted over the facility. "These recent serious attacks on the civilian population and civilian infrastructure must be investigated immediately, thoroughly and independently, and those responsible must be held accountable," he demanded.

The missile attacks will also occupy the Security Council today. The most powerful body of the United Nations is due to meet in New York at 4 p.m. (CEST). France and Ecuador had requested the emergency meeting.
