Following the death of imprisoned Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny, the UN Human Rights Office has called on Moscow to release all those persecuted by the state. "We call on the Russian authorities to end the persecution of politicians, human rights defenders and journalists, among others," said a spokeswoman for UN Human Rights High Commissioner Volker Türk in Geneva on Friday. The United Nations Human Rights Office is "appalled" by Navalny's death, the spokesperson said. From the office's point of view, every time a prisoner dies, it must be assumed that the state in question is responsible. "This responsibility can only be refuted by an impartial, thorough and open investigation by an independent body," the spokesperson said.
