More people around the world are fleeing war, conflict, violence and persecution than ever before: in May, 120 million people were displaced from their homes worldwide, as reported by the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR in Geneva on Thursday. That is almost ten percent more than a year ago or around 1.5 percent of the world's population.

More than two thirds of people are looking for a place to stay within the borders of their own home country. Two thirds of those who flee across borders live in neighboring countries, most of which are poor themselves. Many stay there in the hope of being able to return to their home countries quickly. The USA and Germany were the most popular destinations for people seeking long-term protection: after the USA, Germany recorded the highest number of asylum applications last year.
