At its delegates' meeting on Saturday, the Swiss trade union Unia spoke out in favor of the continuation of the free movement of persons with the European Union. At the same time, the union called for "effective" wage protection.

According to Unia, regulated relations with the EU and "Bilaterals III" can only be achieved on the basis of strong and equal employee rights for all. Wage dumping and deregulation on the one hand, and discrimination and demagogy surrounding a "Switzerland of ten million" on the other, are clearly rejected, it continued.

The Unia delegates' assembly adopted a manifesto on the subject entitled "Equal wages and rights regardless of origin". This reaffirms "Unia's commitment to a democratic and social Europe in which people can move freely and which guarantees the protection of employees with good working and wage conditions".

The manifesto is an appeal to the Federal Council and the European Commission to "absolutely" accompany the opening of the single market with "even more effective measures to protect wages and working conditions". In view of a median wage that is three times higher than in the EU, it is clear that Switzerland must continue to be able to "independently define effective measures" to prevent dumping and an implosion of wages.
