The storms at the weekend hit the upper Maggia Valley hard. At a media conference broadcast by RSI, the authorities reported destroyed traffic routes and severely impaired communication. Three fatalities have been confirmed so far.

The upper part of the valley could only be reached by air on Sunday because the flooding Maggia had torn down a bridge near Cevio. Meanwhile, several hundred trapped people had to be brought to safety. Emergency accommodation was available in several places in the Locarno region.

The canton has requested the help of the army, as was announced at the media conference. On the one hand, help is needed for the installation of a temporary bridge, and on the other, two Super Puma helicopters for evacuations.

In Peccia alone, 300 people who had been taking part in a football tournament were still waiting to be evacuated. In the village of Fontana in Val Bavona, three people died and a dozen more were brought to safety. The search continued for a person missing in Peccia.
