Because the A13 through Misox GR, the alternative north-south connection to the Gotthard route, was severely damaged in Friday's storm and is now closed, the canton of Uri is expecting increased traffic volumes on the Gotthard during the upcoming vacation travel season. It is seeking intercantonal solutions to reduce congestion and increase traffic flow.
Gusti Planzer, media spokesman for the Uri cantonal police, told the Keystone-SDA news agency in response to an inquiry on Monday.
According to Planzer, the focus is on the main roads: These should, whenever possible, be easily navigable by emergency vehicles, public transport, traffic within the canton and tourist traffic.
According to Planzer, the cantonal police are currently in contact with many partner organizations in connection with the A13 closure. There is a strong exchange with the Federal Roads Office (Astra), which is responsible for the A2 highway. The analysis phase is still ongoing.
Because the canton of Uri has been struggling with increasingly long traffic jams in front of the Gotthard road tunnel in recent years, it launched a congestion management project together with Astra in 2023. The aim of this project is to reduce congestion and optimize traffic flow. The aim was also to specifically reduce avoidance traffic on the cantonal road.
Planzer went on to say that the canton is basically well positioned with these measures. It is clear that, in addition to vacation traffic, additional traffic is to be expected on the Gotthard. However, this cannot be quantified at the present time.
According to the Federal Roads Office (Astra), the damaged and closed A13 near Lostallo GR will be partially open to traffic again in about a month. This is subject to favorable weather conditions in order to restore the damaged roadway. The San Bernardino route is normally an alternative north-south connection to the Gotthard route through the canton of Uri.
