The construction of a temporary port announced by the USA to deliver aid to the embattled Gaza Strip will soon begin, according to the Pentagon. "All the necessary ships are in the Mediterranean," said US Department of Defense spokesman Pat Ryder on Tuesday (local time). "We are in a position to begin construction very soon". The US government had announced in March that it wanted to set up a temporary port to bring food, water and medicine to the war zone in view of the humanitarian emergency in Gaza as a result of the fighting between Israel and the Islamist Hamas. In view of the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, the USA recently called on its ally Israel to rapidly expand aid deliveries for the civilian population.
In the meantime, Israel has taken "significant steps" to improve the flow of aid, the news portal "Axios" quoted David Satterfield, US President Joe Biden's special representative for humanitarian issues in the Middle East. However, more needs to be done. There is still a risk of famine in northern Gaza. A few days ago, according to the World Food Program (WFP), trucks carrying aid for the north passed through the newly opened Erez border crossing for the first time since the start of the war. Aid also reached the north of the sealed-off coastal area via another border crossing. In addition, aid deliveries were handled for the first time via the port of Ashdod in southern Israel. According to experts, aid for Gaza must be expanded quickly. This Wednesday, a UN report on hunger worldwide will be presented in Geneva.
