Like Graubünden, the canton of Valais accepts the suspensive effect of appeals by nature conservation organizations against the shooting of wolves. The Department of Security, Institutions and Sport has decided not to lodge an appeal due to time constraints.
Due to the end of proactive wolf regulation set for January 31, 2024, a decision by the Federal Supreme Court in such a short space of time is unrealistic, the department headed by Frédéric Favre told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Thursday. It thus confirmed information from the newspaper "Walliser Bote".
In mid-December, the canton of Valais had to order the cessation of wolf culls in the Hauts-Forts, Nanz and Le Fou-Isérables wolf packs. This decision followed an appeal by nature conservation organizations to the Federal Administrative Court, which granted suspensive effect for the duration of the proceedings.
The Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) and the cantons concerned then unsuccessfully applied for the suspensive effect to be lifted. Following a "summary examination and after weighing up the various interests", the Federal Administrative Court came to the conclusion that the interest in maintaining the suspensive effect prevailed.
Since December 1, Valais has killed 24 wolves out of the 34 originally targeted. While shooting has been suspended for three packs, the hunt continues for the other nine.
