On the first day of the wolf hunt, gamekeepers in Valais shot a young wolf from the Augstbord pack on Friday. This pack is one of seven that the mountain canton wants to eliminate completely.
The canton of Valais announced on Friday that an autopsy will be carried out on the shot animal in accordance with the usual procedure. The laboratory for conservation biology at the University of Lausanne will carry out a genetic analysis of the young wolf.
Valais has received authorization from the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) for the complete removal of seven packs. This corresponds to around 34 wolves from an estimated population of 90 to 120 animals. However, the authorities conceded that the planned number is unlikely to be reached by the end of January.
The shootings are possible due to the revised Hunting Ordinance. According to this, wolves may be shot preventively in Switzerland from December 1 to January 31, i.e. before they have caused damage to livestock.
Nationwide, the cantons are allowed to shoot a total of twelve wolf packs completely. The canton of Graubünden wants to remove four of the twelve wolf packs. In the canton of St. Gallen, the Calfeisental pack is to be removed. According to the federal government, 32 wolf packs with a total of around 300 wolves currently roam Switzerland.
