Christophe Darbellay, State Councillor of Valais, will go wolf hunting. He is one of the hunters who will take part in the proactive regulation of packs organized by the canton.
"Normally, I only hunt what I eat and I only eat what I hunt," Christophe Darbellay told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Tuesday. Regional media had previously reported on Darbellay's participation in the planned wolf hunt. However, "this is about sending a signal that the wolf must be proactively regulated. We have more packs in Valais than the Confederation envisages for the whole of Switzerland. There is nothing more to say," says Darbellay.
The Valais authorities have decided to kill seven of the thirteen packs present in the canton. This corresponds to around 34 wolves out of an estimated population of 90 to 120 animals. To achieve this, the canton is turning to hunters, who must undergo special training to take part in the operation, and the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) has approved an application to this effect.
According to the Office for Hunting, Fishing and Wildlife (SCPF), around 800 of the canton's 3,000 hunters have completed this training this year. Darbellay is one of them. This year, the centrist politician also obtained a fox hunting license in addition to his hunting licenses for high and low hunting.
Wolf hunting mainly takes place at night. Darbellay, who is also head of the Valais government, is not worried about the multiple workload. He will be available for wolf hunting at night, at weekends and during the vacations.
