Vandal destroys 150-year-old tree in the rose garden in Bern

The city of Bern has to cut down a 150-year-old tree in the rose garden after an act of vandalism. The police had previously caught the alleged perpetrator in the act on Monday.
The man had tampered with the tree with a chainsaw, a police spokeswoman told the Keystone-SDA news agency. The police stopped the man and took him to a police station.
Investigations by the city nursery revealed that the tree had been so badly damaged that it had to be felled. The work began on Monday. Parts of the rose garden were closed, as was the Aargauerstalden. The road is located directly below the park and is also in the danger zone. The police were initially unable to say how long the closure would last.
The tree in question was a 150-year-old lime tree, according to Bern's city nursery. The lime tree had already been sawn down several times by unknown persons in March, as the news platform J reported at the time.
