The canton of Vaud presented its Vision 2050 for rail transport on Thursday. The most important priorities are shorter journey times and a more frequent timetable.
Only with an ambitious expansion of rail transport can climate targets be reconciled with the growing demand for mobility due to the rising population, said Vaud Transport Minister Nuria Gorrite (SP) to the media on Thursday. The declared goal is to double the share of rail transport by 2050.
Specifically, the construction of a new line is intended to reduce the journey time between Lausanne and Bern to 45 minutes. This would be a time saving of around 20 minutes compared to today. Furthermore, capacity on the Lausanne-Geneva axis as well as on the Jura-Südfuss line and the Simplon axis is to be significantly expanded.
At regional level, the canton is aiming for a 30-minute interval on the entire network; in the conurbations and along the busiest commuter routes, trains should run every 15 minutes.
The canton of Vaud expects the total volume of mobility to increase by 30 percent by 2050. The increase in demand for passenger transportation is estimated at 90 percent, which is almost double the current figure. For freight transport, the canton expects an increase of 45 percent.
The financial framework for the projects listed in the rail strategy is estimated at over CHF 20 billion. According to the canton of Vaud, over 80 percent of this will be used to implement projects of national importance. According to Gorrite, investments for regional services amount to around CHF 4 billion.
