EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen supports the idea of appointing a European Commissioner for Defense. If she were to remain Commission President, she would appoint a Commissioner for Defense, the German politician said on Saturday at the Munich Security Conference. She thinks this would be sensible.
It is considered certain that von der Leyen will seek a second term as President of the European Commission. However, the 65-year-old has not yet made any public statements on the subject. An announcement is expected this Monday. This is when the executive committee of the CDU meets in Berlin, which would have to propose her as the candidate of the European political party family, the EPP. Wednesday is the deadline by which EPP candidates can be nominated for the post of President of the EU Commission.
Former German Defense Minister von der Leyen has been President of the EU Commission since 2019. Her current term of office ends on October 31.
In addition to CDU politicians, representatives of other parties such as the CSU, SPD and FDP have already spoken out in favor of a Commissioner for Defense. The background to this is, in particular, the new security situation in Europe following the start of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.
