The German cult director Wim Wenders has just been honored in Lucerne with a European Film Award for his life's work. Now a lavishly designed DVD and Blu-ray box set is being released with the classics and some gems from the prolific filmmaker's oeuvre. The 79-year-old selected the films himself.
The selection shows that Wim Wenders is good for surprises. The Düsseldorf-born filmmaker has selected works that were previously only known to aficionados. The partially improvised road movie "Im Lauf der Zeit" (1976), for example, or the self-reflexive look at the film business "Der Stand der Dinge" (1982) may come as much of a surprise as the US film "Am Ende der Gewalt" (1997), which celebrates its premiere on Blu-Ray in this context.
As expected, the collection, laconically titled "Best Of Wim Wenders" by Arthouse, includes those works in the compendium that are part of humanity's film heritage, such as "The Sky Above Berlin" (1987). The old master's most recent and perhaps most touching film, his Japan essay "Perfect Days" (2023), has also made its way into the Olympus assembled by the master himself.
What is missing from the Wenders collection, however, are the documentary works. Neither "Buena Vista Social Club" nor "Pina" can be found in this look back over the decades.
However, one work in the collection will also make a solo appearance. The classic "Paris, Texas" starring Nastassja Kinski and Harry Dean Stanton is also being released in UHD to mark the 40th anniversary of its theatrical release. Extensive bonus material is included here - as with the other films in the box set. In addition to the usual audio commentaries and interviews, the best-of includes a conversation between Wenders and the immortal Roger Willemsen as well as a master class by the director.
