Withdrawals due to illness almost reach record level in 2023

The number of ID card withdrawals due to illness and infirmity increased in 2023. Last year, it was 14.1 percent higher than in the previous year. At 5,985 cases, it was almost at the highest level in the last ten years.
The last peak in this type of revocation was reached in 2017 with 6004 cases. With 21,133 cases, the number of foreign driving licenses revoked in 2023 also rose significantly (+17.8 percent compared to 2022). This is shown by the annual statistics of the Federal Roads Office (Astra), which were published on Tuesday. Here too, excessive speed was the main reason.
Overall, the number of license withdrawals increased slightly by 0.9 percent (80,015), as can be seen from the statistics on administrative measures. In 58.7 percent of these withdrawals, excessive speed, drunkenness or endangering others through inattention were the reasons for the withdrawal.
On the other hand, there was a decline in the number of learner's licenses withdrawn (- 3.2 percent) and probationary driving licenses canceled (- 6.1 percent), Astra reported.
75,712 people acquired their new driving license for passenger cars in 2023. This continued the decline from the previous year. In 2022, 83,626 new drivers were counted.
On December 31, 2023, around 6.3 million people in Switzerland held a driving license for passenger cars, 0.9% more than twelve months earlier.
