The Wallis representation in the National Council remains unchanged. All the previous ones, three center-politicians, two SVP representatives as well as one social democrat, freethinker and green were re-elected on Sunday. Once again, all eight seats will be occupied only by men. At the top were the three Middle representatives Sidney Kamerzin (31,398 votes), Philipp Matthias Bregy (28,872 votes) and Benjamin Roduit (28,575 votes). The FDP was able to defend its seat thanks to its star candidate Philippe Nantermod (24,443 votes). The Swiss People's Party politicians Jean-Luc Addor (20,740 votes) and Michael Graber (19,509 votes) followed. The Green Christophe Clivaz (17,868 votes) and the Social Democrat Emmanuel Amoos (15,400 votes) formed the bottom of the elected. The voter turnout in the 2020 Swiss federal election decreased compared to the previous elections in 2019 (54.06%) and 2015 (59.76%). The turnout was lower in the French-speaking cantons. In the Upper Valais it was 59.39%, in the Middle Valais 49.07% and in the Lower Valais 43.41%. The Centre party has managed to maintain its standing in the canton of Valais, achieving 35.4 percent of the vote. This is a recovery from its historic low of 34.8 percent and the loss of a seat to the Greens four years ago. Please accept my highest regards. The Swiss People's Party (SVP) is celebrating its highest increase in voter share since its founding in 1999. The party increased its voter share from 19.8 to 24.5 percent, though it was not enough to gain an additional seat in parliament. Jean-Luc Addor, the 59-year-old Member of Parliament in Bern, is starting a third term with a better result than in 2019 (17'535). The Upper Valaisian Michael Graber is entering a second term after slipping in 2021 during the legislative period. The Free Democratic Party (FDP) fell from 16.5 to 14.7 percent in the recent election, but managed to retain their seat thanks to Philippe Nantermod. The party was unable to gain a second seat, however. "We knew it would be difficult, so we are not disappointed," said party president Florian Piasenta. The Social Democratic Party (SP) found itself in a similar situation: it was able to retain its seat with Emmanuel Amoos, but was unable to regain the seat it lost in 2015. "This is a disappointment, as a second SP seat would have enabled us to bring a woman into the Grand Chamber," said Amoos. The leader of the SP's Valais branch, Sarah Constantin, was given a chance to be elected, but was ultimately unsuccessful. The Green Party is relieved. There is relief among the Greens as Christophe Clivaz was able to defend the seat that had been deemed at risk in recent polls. He had snatched the seat from the centre in 2019. The voter share of the Greens, which had more than doubled four years ago, decreased from 10.6 to 8.4 percent. ©Keystone/SDA
