"Next Generation Mozart Soloists" is the name of a project that promotes young talent in the field of classical music. As part of this project, all of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's solo concertos are being recorded. The last of these recordings took place in Vienna on Wednesday. These recordings will be released on CD by 2025. There will be 17 in total.

The Zurich-based Orpheum Foundation is behind "Next Generation Mozart Soloists". It has been supporting young soloists for more than 30 years by giving them the opportunity to perform with renowned orchestras and conductors. During the pandemic, the idea for the CD series was born on this basis.

Three orchestras were involved in the recording of the more than 50 Mozart solo concertos: the Camerata Schweiz, the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna and the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg. A total of forty soloists from twenty nations performed with these orchestras. Artists such as conductor Daniel Barenboim, pianist András Schiff and his colleague Rudolf Buchbinder have personally recommended the young talents. Howard Griffiths conducted the majority of the recordings.

Mozart's solo concertos include 27 for piano, five violin concertos and concertos for horn, flute, oboe or clarinet; there are also two Sinfonie Concertante.

Recordings completed

On Wednesday, the recordings were completed with Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 9 (KV 271) and No. 12 (KV 414/385p), as the Orpheum Foundation announced the same day. The solo part was played by the American pianist Evren Ozel; he performed together with the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra.

The Orpheum Foundation was established by Hans Heinrich Coninx, who was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tamedia AG (now TX Group) for many years. He also presided over the Zurich Chamber Orchestra.

Artists who have since made a name for themselves internationally once benefited from performance opportunities offered to them by the Orpheum Foundation. They include the percussionist Martin Grubinger, the violinist Nicola Benedetti, the cellist Gautier Capuçon and the pianist Oliver Schnyder.
