Zarina Bhimji receives art prize from the Roswitha Haftmann Foundation

Zarina Bhimji receives the Roswitha Haftmann Prize 2024, endowed with 150,000 Swiss francs, the most valuable art prize in Europe. Born in Uganda, the 61-year-old photographer, film and installation artist lives and works in London.
Bhimji's multi-layered work is relevant both aesthetically and conceptually as well as from a socio-critical perspective, the Roswitha Haftmann Foundation announced on Wednesday. Bhimji is one of the "quiet" artists. Her powerful work, which manages without text or spectacular actions, explores the state of this earth.
For research purposes, Bhimji is setting up temporary open-air studios in East Africa, the UK and India before putting together a body of work in her permanent studio, according to the statement.
According to the foundation, it was the extraordinary work of this "established artist who has so far sailed under the radar of the international art trade" that persuaded the jury to award her Europe's most highly endowed art prize.
The prizewinner is chosen by the Board of Trustees of the Roswitha Haftmann Foundation, whose members include the directors of the Kunstmuseum Bern, the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne and the Kunsthaus Zürich. The award ceremony will take place on November 29 at the Kunsthaus Zürich.
