Zurich Airport recorded almost as many flights in May as before the coronavirus pandemic. A total of 23,465 flights took off and landed at Switzerland's largest airport. This is 2 percent fewer than in May 2019.
This means that the gap to the pre-crisis figures is continuing to narrow, as an analysis of data from the news agency AWP shows. However, there were also two more days off in May 2024 with Whit Monday and Corpus Christi, which is celebrated in many cantons, while both public holidays in 2019 only fell in June. Public holidays during the week often lead to people taking bridging days and flying off on vacation.
In April, the gap to the same month in 2019 was more than twice as high at 4.7%. In the first three months of the year, the decline was even in the double-digit range, at -14.5% in January, -11.9% in February and -10.6% in March.
Compared to the same month last year, the number of flights continued to rise: compared to May 2023, 8.3% more aircraft took off and landed in Zurich in May this year. However, there was also one more day off in 2024 than in the previous year with Corpus Christi.
The flight movement figures at Zurich Airport are based on daily updated statistics, in which all flights are recorded according to instrument flight rules. This so-called IFR traffic includes scheduled flights as well as cargo, business and private flights. However, the number of flight movements says nothing about the size of the aircraft handled and their capacity utilization.
Zurich Airport will publish detailed passenger and traffic figures for the month of May on June 12.
