For the first time in three and a half years, slightly fewer aircraft took off and landed at Zurich Airport in October than in the same month last year. Aircraft movements fell by 0.2 percent, according to an analysis by AWP Data.
In absolute figures, there were 22,955 take-offs and landings at Zurich Airport in October. Compared to the previous month of September, this represents a decrease of 2.7 percent.
October 11 - a Friday in the middle of the autumn vacations - was the busiest day at Switzerland's largest airport with 840 take-offs and landings. The fewest flight movements were registered last Tuesday with 634.
According to the survey, the number of aircraft movements in October was 2.8% lower than in October 2019, i.e. before the pandemic. This means that the difference to the pre-crisis level has widened again slightly. In September, the figure was still 1.2% below the 2019 level.
2024 with more flights overall
Even though flights fell slightly in October: Total air traffic at Zurich Airport for the period from January to October is still 6.3% higher than in the previous year. However, this is 5.4 percent less than the pre-pandemic level.
However, the number of flights says nothing about the number of passengers. Depending on the load factor of the flights and the size of the aircraft, the passenger numbers can also be higher with fewer flight movements.
The flight movement figures at Zurich Airport are based on daily updated statistics, in which all flights are recorded according to instrument flight rules. This so-called IFR traffic includes scheduled flights as well as cargo, business and private flights.
Zurich Airport will publish detailed passenger and traffic figures for the month of September on November 12.
