Zurich Airport again recorded a significant increase in passenger traffic in April. A total of 2.62 million passengers traveled through Switzerland's largest airport in April. This was 6.9 percent more than in the same month last year, as the airport announced on Tuesday evening.

The early Easter, which was in March this year with the exception of Easter Monday, played a slightly dampening role. In the previous year, the Easter holidays were in April, which resulted in more festive traffic in the comparable month. The basis for comparison was therefore higher.

Together with the spring, summer, fall and Christmas vacations, Easter is one of the busiest and busiest times for passenger traffic at Zurich Airport. In the previous month of March, passenger numbers had climbed by over 12 percent.

Overall, the airport remained close to pre-pandemic levels in April: The number of passengers was 96.1% of the April 2019 level.

More flights

A good 70 percent of travelers were local passengers. 29 percent of travelers changed planes in Zurich.

In addition, more flights were operated than in April 2023. The number of flight movements rose by 7% year-on-year to 21,967 take-offs and landings. The gap to the level before the coronavirus crisis in March 2019 is still 5.6 percentage points.

Machines somewhat weaker occupied

On average, 133.7 passengers were seated on an aircraft. This is 1.8% less than in the previous year. The seat occupancy rate fell by 1.3 percentage points to 79.8%.

The airport also handled 34,740 tons of freight in April. This corresponds to an increase of 9.6% compared to the same month last year. However, compared to April 2019, i.e. before the coronavirus pandemic, a good 7 percent less freight was transported.

And people spent a little more money in the airport's stores and restaurants. Compared to the previous year, commercial sales increased by 0.7 percent to 51.3 million francs. Only the stores and restaurants on the "airside", i.e. after the security checkpoint, benefited from passengers' desire to spend, with an increase of 5.8 percent. In contrast, the stores on the "landside" suffered a decline of 5.5%.
