Zurich court sentences 48-year-old man for murder of his wife

The Zurich District Court has handed down a 20-year prison sentence against a 48-year-old man for murder. He had killed his 30-year-old wife and mother of two joint children with numerous knife wounds in Zurich-Altstetten in October 2021.
If the man is released from prison, a 15-year ban from the country will come into effect. The man must pay the two children of primary school age CHF 70,000 each, and the victim's parents CHF 10,000 each in compensation. The verdict is not yet final. It can be appealed to the Higher Court of the Canton of Zurich.
The defense attorney for the Turk had pleaded for a conviction for manslaughter and a maximum prison sentence of five years. If the crime qualifies as murder, a maximum of 15 years would be appropriate.
With its verdict, the court largely followed the prosecution's requests. The prosecutor had demanded a life sentence.

The man had been released from prison just three weeks before the crime. He had served a partial prison sentence for violence, fraud and other offenses. During this time, the woman filed for divorce and turned to another man. While still serving his sentence, the husband harassed and threatened her. He was forbidden to enter the apartment.
On October 13, 2021, he waited at the entrance of the house until the woman came home. He attacked her with a knife and fatally injured her. Then he rammed the knife into his own stomach and drove away. About half an hour later, he appeared at the police station. The knife was never found.
Before the district court, he stated that he could not remember the crime. He described himself as peaceful. His wife, however, who was also from Turkey, had often insulted him. His defense attorney also blamed the victim for his own death.
