Zurich Opera House announced its program for the 2024/25 season on Tuesday. This will be Artistic Director Andreas Homoki's last season at the opera house.
The program for the 2024/25 season, which begins in September, includes four world premieres, including the first choral opera by Swiss composer Beat Furrer, the Zurich Opera House announced on Tuesday.
Of nine opera premieres, director Andreas Homoki will once again stage two new productions, namely at the beginning and end of the season. He will direct the opening premiere of "Ariadne auf Naxos" by Richard Strauss.
For his last production as director of Zurich Opera House, Homoki has made an unusual choice with the oratorio "Elijah" by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy.
At the end of the season, Homoki's thirteen-year era at the opera house comes to an end. Together with his team, he will have premiered 123 new opera productions and 39 ballet evenings. Before his time at Zurich Opera House, the 64-year-old worked at the Komische Oper Berlin.
Homoki's successor has already been in place for some time and, like him, will also be moving from the German capital to Zurich. Matthias Schulz, currently Artistic Director of the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden, will take up his post in Zurich on August 1, 2025. He will direct the opening premiere of "Ariadne auf Naxos" by Richard Strauss.
